I got it for one reason: no monthly fee
I'm playing it now because I enjoy it and there's no monthly fee.

No monthly fee.
Of course, that was two years ago. I have continued to play it because it is, in my opinion, the superior MMO out there. It's just a bonus now that I don't have to pay-to-play.

It's one of a few games where me and my girlfriend can sit and play together, our pcs at home set up next to each other lol. Also when it come down to it, the no monthly fee is the biggest reason I play GW.
This game and space cowboy.

My first rpg was Baldur's Gate, spent years playig it till someone deleated my character HAd a few other similar types of game Return to Krondor being one, my first online game was Star Wars Galaxies, which i go on the odd time still but get frustrated as i keep getting lost connections on it,
I bought Guild Wars primarily because it was free and i can't affoard to pay another online subscription fee, and also because it was fantasy based, at the time of buying it was a better choice to WoW because f the free thing

The things that attracted me were the:
The Lore – The lore of GW looked great right from the start, Gw had Character “When my Father was in Guildwas…….” Right from the cinematic
The Graphics – They looked amazing even though my Pc at the time wasn’t able to play above low settings at the time, I knew in time when I upgraded I would be able to.
The No Monthly Fee – I cant afford a monthy fee and at the time I didn’t even have a full time internet connection (making a monthly fee quite annoying for the amount of hours I had online)

I'm kinda a hard MMO player. I just had to take a break from EQ2 end game raiding for RL reasons, before that I've done a lot of things like FFXI, EQ, EQOA, VG... even tried things like City of Heros and probably LOTR.
I just always come to GW when I'm bored (pvp ftw) because its pretty casual and free. I mean, I like the game. I think campaigns in an MMO with missions like this is great, and only a level 20 cap even better. Plus I enjoy only having 8 skills on a bar, it makes everyone on a team count.
I'm disappointed GW2 is going to have such a high level cap. If I want to grind out a character for that long, I'll play something else.

I was a big fan of games like Final Fantasy. I bought FFXI and well meh didnt like it much. Guild Wars was one of my first online games. Back in 2005 I was browsing through some GameSpot articles for online games to overcome FFXI and saw a banner advertising Guild Wars...infact I accidentally clicked on it and went "ahhh silly popups" then Eve caught my eye and I thought...wow good graphics! Of course my computer was brand new back then and I decided to look more into it. I saw the trailer, then the ultimate 'free online play' I got hooked, went and preordered the Collectors Edition (yum aura) and been playing 24 months and still going strong! Plus my computer is aging now...and Guild Wars still plays fine. Thats what I love about it!
GG.

GW came to light for me on another MMO forum oddly enough.
I started playing RF Online as research into MMO geometry limitations (just started 3d modelling for a living), but I didn't want to stick with it because of the repetitive grind and lack of anything resembling lore or a storyline.
Someone mentioned GW and free to play, so I spent my £15 on a copy, bought another for the hubby...
... three campaigns later we're still at it in our husband and wife guild of two, and despite the fact that we've tried Archlord (horrible) and are both currently active in WoW we still fire up GW plenty. It's still my favourite for all the positive things already mentioned, and I still play every day, mostly at work during lunch at the mo'.

same here.
well replace the 2k hours with 4k hours and the whole "so i bought it" with:
"so i went home to see if i could get a cracked version of the internet, didnt see one, checked what the game was about, fell in LOVE with ranger spirits and ran to the store in the morning to buy it."
kinda the same story as yours

well lets see, My gaming clan started playing GW back in the beta sn it was a huge hit. We were looking to get into a MMORPG and adding it to our divisions. With GW being Subscription free and having a universal server system, it was a given to go GW instead of WoW. Our gaming clan is rather big and is very spreed out all over the world. WoW while many had it they were all in different servers and never played with each other because of it. GW however offered international districts which made things very easy to play with friends from across the world.
Other games in our gaming clan include.
Battlefield 2 / 2142
Swat 4
UT2k4 / UTIII (when it comes out)...
Halo
C&C Renegade / C&C 3 RTS.
And we are actively trying to get signed up for Star Trek Online beta when it goes out for testers.
I expect GW:EW will be picked up, but Somehow I doubt GW 2 will be in our gaming clan. Which is sad, but truth is we started expanding back to our roots recently and moving away from the MMO style games. Just takes too much time and effort to get people interested in them I think. And while GW is cheaper then WoW, by design, there is still some expense because of new chapters or expansions 2 times a year. GW 2 will make it if they retain the universal servers concept for being able to find others to play with from across the world... But if they do the WoW Realm fiasco, I doubt many clans like ours will go for it. Indeed that and that alone was the deciding factor for most of us. Ease of finding each other, and not being dependent on being on servers that some may have very bad connections too.

I've been gaming since the early 80's (in fact, earlier, I played pong when it first came out)... who remembers Wizardry 1 & Zork?
I skipped the online games because they all seemed to require broadband and I didn't want to get sucked into paying a monthly fee. Anyone ever try to quit AOL (or even XM for that matter)... good lord once they have that monthly fee going you can't get them to cancel it.
ftr I enjoyed all the campaigns. What kept me was the complexity & the community.

Same as everyone else: Lack of fees....
That and the fact that it is instanced. I love instanced games.... like GW and PSO. I've never even tried playing a non-instanced game... as I've watched Adam playing EQ2 and absolutely hated the look of it.

I love RPG's but hadnt ever played an online one. I bought GW cos it had really good reviews, and it was free to play. I tried D+D online too after it went cheap, but I stopped playing as soon as my free 30 days ended.

I was drawn to Guild Wars by one thing...
1) The promise of 100% free PvP-oriented play forever.
I hate any incarnation of PvE, in any way, shape or form. I refuse to play it. Sure, it looks pretty enough, but that's about it.

I usually play games like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights... until I got into playing Magic Online for the majority of the time. Then... I saw Guild Wars and it looked fun... and what attracted me the most was no monthly fees!
